One Thing You Shouldn't Do with a Tool Any More than You Should Do Otherwise

14.3 One Thing You Shouldn't Do with a Tool Any More than You Should Do Otherwise

The fact that an estimate comes out of a software estimation tool doesn't mean that it's accurate. The estimate's assumptions might be incorrect, or the estimate might have been calibrated with inappropriate or flawed calibration data. The tool's control knobs might have been used to insert bias. The tool's underlying estimation methodology might be questionable.

Tip #65

Don't treat the output of a software estimation tool as divine revelation. Sanitycheck estimation tool outputs just as you would other estimates.
